    Dear Families,

As I’m sure you are all aware, November 3 is Election Day. This important election comes at a time that none of us could have imagined a year ago. We are navigating a pandemic and remote learning while working to uphold our values as a district and commitment to becoming an anti-racist organization. Locally and nationally, we are witnessing and experiencing anti-Black racism and actions along with related protests, and for some of us, participating in a national debate about the value of our lives and the lives of people we love. It is normal for election outcomes to cause some level of anxiety – this year is truly unprecedented.

As the principal at Hazel Wolf K-8, I want you to know that together, we will create a safe, respectful learning environment next week.  No matter what the outcome of the elections, we have provided our staff with the flexibility to let the students talk and share their thoughts.  Their social emotional state and needs, come before curriculum.   We will keep our communication open with families as needed.

    New Announcements

    1.  Year of Purpose - This year we are expanding our Week of Action into a Year of Purpose. During this year we are reflecting on our role in upholding our racist system and our relationship to antiracist pedagogy and abolitionist practice. We are pushing ourselves to center Black lives in our classrooms thus best service each and every one of our students. Each month we will come together for a Day of Action highlighting an intersectional principle. November is Trans Affirming, “we embrace and make space for trans brothers and sisters to participate and lead while being self-reflective and doing the work required to dismantle cis-gender privilege and uplift Black trans folks."

    2. 5th Grade Science/Math - The 5th grade has packets to pick up with science materials and math materials in them.  These materials will be available on the cart with kid’s names on them along with the planners starting Monday from 9-3.

    3. Conferences – This year we will be using a new approach to signing up for the conferences.  We will have one online document where there will be a separate tab for each classroom (K-5)/ pack teacher (6-8).  The link for this will be out later this week.  For students in MS, they will have templates that they are expected to fill out so that they are able to lead their conferences.

    4. Middle School Wednesday Schedules (Correction)  – Starting on November 4th, and only on the first Wednesday of the month, after Pack Time, teachers will hold office hours from 9:05 – 10:35.  After that time, students can work on the assigned asynchronous work, or catch up on something they missed.
