    The first week has gotten us off to a great start! Your students came prepared and ready for their new adventure, and you all had smiles on your faces as you looked toward a new freedom you may not have seen for two months. We especially appreciate your flexibility with our temporary drop off and pick up routine. Unfortunately, it will continue as work was stalled this week due to gas line issues. This is why we teach our kids “flexibility”!

    New Announcements:
    1. Back To School Night (K-5) September 18th
    Join us for the evening so you can get to know your child’s classroom teacher and learn what the year ahead will hold for them.
    K-2 6:00 – 6:45 (in your child’s classroom) 3-5 6:50 – 7:35 (in your child’s classroom). Book Fair open in the library 5:30 – 8:00

    Although we ask that you try and make other arrangements for your children during Back to School Night, we will have supervision available in the gym. They can be dropped off starting at 5:45.

    2. Library – Libraries are meant to be the center point of the school and Ms. Fournier keeps it open for students as much as possible. The Library is open every day before school - starting at 8:35, for MS lunch every day, and rotating recess times for the other grades.

    sheets are due at the end of September. Students have the entire month to finish! Turn them in to Ms. Fournier in the library.

    Middle School BYOD
    forms must be turned in to Ms. Fournier in the library before a student may have a phone or other device at school.

    3. Middle School Sports - All Middle School students interested in playing a sport this Fall (Girls Soccer/Co Ed Ultimate Frisbee): Please fill out the forms below along with the $15 payment and return it to Mr. Jose or Mr. Rance by Monday 9/16.

    4. ELL Staffing - We’re excited to introduce our expanded ELL Staff! We have 4 multi-lingual Instructional Assistants and 3 Teachers. See below for languages and schedules.

    5. First Day Coffee for Kindergarten families – Welcome Kindergarten families, connect with other families over coffee and goodies after drop-off on the first day of school, September 9. Location: Outside on the library patio (2nd Floor).

    6. Book Fair volunteers are needed to make our event happen. The Book Fair is coming up Sept. 16-19. Please consider signing up to help set up, assist during the Book Fair, break down the Book Fair or re-set up the library!

    7. Get involved by being a classroom parent rep - We still need classroom parent reps for many classrooms. The rep acts as the bridge for communication between the teacher/PTSA and parents. Also, the rep helps the teacher organize class parties, supports teacher appreciation efforts and organizes the classroom auction item. If you would like to help out, please email The following classes still need a rep:

    8. Join the MS Overnight Outdoor Ed Program Planning Committee - We need 3 or 4 volunteers to help us plan and prepare for an 8th grade camping trip in the spring 2020. Volunteers should have experience with camping in the PNW and an interest in creating a sustainable, affordable, and engaging experience for MS kids. Monthly volunteer meetings: September to February. Meet as needed March to May, until the program launches in mid-May to early June. Volunteers are encouraged, though not expected, to attend the overnight program as chaperones.

    9. Our Annual 6th grade trip to Mount Rainier Institute takes place from Tuesday, October 1 through Friday, October 4. The student cost this year is $350. Some scholarships are available. The forms will come home with 6th graders on Monday, Sep 9. John Hayes, direct of the MRI program, will be here on curriculum night, Wednesday, Sep 25. He’ll make a brief presentation and answer questions in the library following the classroom teacher presentations. We are still looking for a couple of chaperones.     10. Parent Social Fundraiser Event - Following K-5 Back to School Night and Curriculum Night, head over to Hellbent Brewing Company to socialize with other parents and celebrate the new school year! $1 of every beverage purchased goes back to our PTSA. When you order, let the server know you’re with Hazel Wolf. Please note, Hellbent is a 21+ establishment.

    11. PTSA General Session Meeting - Join us for the first PTSA meeting of the school year. Learn about how the PTSA is supporting our school and the community this year. Location & Time: Cafetorium, 6:30pm.

    12. Racial Equity Book Club Meeting – The group will be discussing Homegoing, by Yaa Gyasi. Start reading now and come join the discussion on Tuesday, October 1. Parents, guardians, staff & teachers are all welcome. Location & Time: Library, 6:30pm.
