    New Announcements:

    1. Allergen Aware - As a school, we can be ‘allergen aware’.  We cannot be a nut free school, or have a nut free classroom.  The rationale for this decision is we cannot guarantee that an environment (the classroom, the lunchroom) is free of allergens.  We do not inspect lunches, nor can we tell a parent how to feed his or her child.  For students that eat at the nut-free table, we cannot guarantee what food students eat there. We don’t inspect or supervise what parents give their children to eat.  I am in the process of providing each classroom teacher with an ‘allergen aware’ poster that can placed by the classroom desk.  If you have individual questions or concerns, please contact me smjonas@seattleschools.org; 206-252-4617

     Reminders
    Flu Shots coming to Hazel Wolf K-8 - Protect yourself, your child, and your community from the flu. Seattle Visiting Nurse Association returns to do the annual flu shots at Hazel Wolf K-8 on September 24, 2019 from 1:30-3:00 PM.  Students (ages 4 and older), staff and community members can get the flu shot. All SPS insurance is accepted. Most forms of insurance (including Apple Health and Medicaid) and cash or check ($40) are accepted. The consent form needs to be completely filled out. Families who have no insurance can write “No insurance” and the student can still get a flu shot. Suzanne Jonas, RN, BSN (she/her)  (206) 252-4617 

    2. Middle School Curriculum Night – Join us on Sept 25th (Wed) to learn all about what your middle school student will be learning in their classes.  The schedule is as follows:
    6:00 – 6:10 1st Period
    6:15 – 6:25 2nd Period
    6:30 – 6:40 Wolf Pack
    6:45 – 6:55 3rd Period
    7:00 – 7:10 4th Period
    7:15 – 7:25 5th Period
    7:30 – 7:40 6th Period
    7:45 – 8:15 6th Grade Mount Rainier Institute Presentation (lunchroom)

    3. Parent Social Fundraiser Event - Following MS Curriculum Night, head over to Hellbent Brewing Company to socialize with other parents and celebrate the new school year! $1 of every beverage purchased goes back to our PTSA. When you order, let the server know you’re with Hazel Wolf. Please note, Hellbent is a 21+ establishment.  

    4. Hazel Wolf Snack Drive, Sept. 16 - Oct. 10. - We are collecting snacks to provide for students in grades 4 – 8 who can’t provide their own or who find themselves in need. Snacks are distributed to students by staff. Guidelines for donations: individual commercially wrapped dry good items that are nutritious and energy sustaining snacks. Collection bins are in the front office.

    5. PTSA General Session Meeting, Sept. 26 - Join us for the first PTSA meeting of the school year. Learn about how the PTSA is supporting our school and community this year.  We will be voting on budget amendments, and Assistant Principal, Janine Madaffari, will talk about how teachers are bringing the practice of restorative justice to Hazel Wolf K-8. (Restorative justice empowers students to resolve conflicts on their own and in small groups, and it's a growing practice at schools around the country.) Remember to register as a member if you’d like to vote!  Childcare provided. Location & Time: Cafetorium, 6:30pm

    6. Join the PTSA!  The start of school year “PTSA Welcome Packet” went out on Friday and includes information about who is on this year’s PTSA Board and how you can get involved, request support, and register as a member.  You can also join online by visiting our new membership platform – MemberPlanet.  Download the app or visit the website:  http://tinyurl.com/hwptsareg.

    7. Racial Equity Book Club Meeting, Oct. 1 – We will be discussing Homegoing, by Yaa Gyasi. Come join the discussion on Tuesday, October 1. Parents, guardians, staff & teachers are all welcome. Location & Time: Library, 6:30pm

    8. Annual Coat Drive, Deadline Oct. 25 – It’s time for the HW Annual Coat Drive! If you would like your child to receive a NEW winter coat with assistance from the coat drive, please fill out the “Coat Request Form” and return the completed form to your child’s teacher or Front Office by Friday, Oct. 25 in the Coat Request form return box located near the nurse’s office door. All information will be kept confidential. Coat Request forms are available in the front office.

    If you are able to sponsor a child, please email (HWcoatdrive@gmail.com) and we will send you a coat request. Please put “Coat Drive” in the subject line of the email.  To make coat shopping easy, we will include size, color preference and gender information for the request.  

    9. Parents Supporting Parents, Oct. 7 – It’s a new school year and time for your kids to make some new friends. How’s it going? Is it a struggle? Come to the first parent support meeting of the year. Bring your concerns and any tools and resources that have helped your family.     10. Multicultural Potluck Celebration, Oct. 16 - Come share a dish and learn about the cultures of friends in our school community. Save the date! More details to come. Location: Cafetorium, Time: TBD
