Message from Dr. Breuder:

Happy September! I hope you have had a restful and relaxing summer.  I was able to do some traveling with my kids and also spend time with family and friends.  My kids and I traveled to Alaska and enjoyed seeing beautiful glaciers, amazing wildlife, and found peace and serenity in the majestic beauty all around us.  My son is starting at the University of Washington in a week, so it was really wonderful to spend some time together as a family this summer.

This last week has been so great to be able to see students in the halls and are looking forward to our kindergarten students starting on Monday.  This time of year is one of my favorites, as students are getting settled into routines in classes and across the school.  Students are reconnecting and meeting new friends, while also getting to know the Hazel Wolf staff.

We have a number of new staff at Hazel Wolf, as well as a few staff members who have taken on different roles.

New to Hazel Wolf:

  • Librarian: Michael Zetterberg
  • Middle School music (band & orchestra): Katyrose Jordan
  • Middle School math: Kalpana Natarajan
  • Middle School science: CJ Roff
  • Multilingual Teacher: Joel Fisaha
  • Middle School Special Education Para: Cel Hausske
  • Middle School Special Education Para: Leizel Calacal
  • Elementary Special Education Teacher: Bill Keating
  • Elementary Special Education Para: Katrin Pinksfeld

New to role:

  • Alyssa Powers (Middle School Social Studies + Middle School Art)
  • Angie Armbrust (4th-grade)
  • Michelle Phan (1st-grade)

Welcome Picnic: We hope you can attend the Welcome Picnic this Friday, September 13th.  This is a great opportunity to meet other families at Hazel Wolf.  The PTSA has organized a fantastic event!

Curriculum Night:

We are holding two different dates for curriculum nights, one for elementary, and one for middle school.

  1. Tuesday, October 1: Middle School Curriculum Night is an in-person event.  We will have a middle school presentation and parents/guardians can walk through student schedules and meet the middle school teachers.
  2. Wednesday, October 9: Elementary (K-5) Curriculum Night is an online event on Microsoft Teams.  We are holding this event online to provide greater access to families to attend from home.  Each grade-level team will present information about the upcoming school year.  Please be on the lookout for those Teams links to be provided by your child’s classroom teacher.

Volunteering at Hazel Wolf:

If you would like to volunteer at Hazel Wolf, please make sure to fill out the volunteer paperwork and attend a Volunteer Orientation.  Attending a Volunteer Orientation is a requirement to volunteer at Hazel Wolf.  (This orientation is good for two years, so if you attended last year, you do not need to attend this year.) This orientation is online and takes about 15 minutes.

Here are the upcoming dates and Teams link:

  • Tuesday, September 10th at 5:00pm
  • Monday, September 23rd at 9:30am
  • Thursday, October 3rd at 5:00pm

Specialist Weekly Showcase:  Meet the Librarian, Mr. Zetterberg!

Hello, Hazel Wolf K-8! I am thrilled to join this wonderful school community as your new librarian. Allow me to introduce myself.

My name is Michael Zetterberg. I am coming to Hazel Wolf K-8 from another SPS school further south, Thurgood Marshall Elementary. I have been teaching for 15 years, the past 6 as a school librarian, and I love it!

Some of the things you can expect for your child to learn in the library this year are an appreciation for diverse literature, important digital citizenship and information literacy skills, and ways that the library can help us live up to the Wolf Pact’s values of being Curious, Caring, Connected, and Supported.

The library will have open hours each day before school from 8:30-8:50am as well as during the Middle School lunch from 12:05-12:25pm. There are two important rules for open library hours: 1) No food or drink and 2) No electronic devices.

Students in grades K-5 will get to visit the library every week with their class for a lesson with me and to check out books. Please check the library schedule and make a note of your child’s library day to help them remember to return their books.

I can’t wait to meet students and connect them with stories and resources! It’s going to be a great school year!
