Please join us for Curriculum Night this Wednesday, October 8th. K-5 teachers will give grade-level presentations, and the middle school team will give one presentation for families. The classrooms will be open for students and families to see the school. Please make sure your students stay with you during Curriculum Night, as there is not childcare at this event. This is meant to be an open house style event for students and families to attend together.

- Grade-level presentations in the library or cafeteria.
- Following each presentation, the classrooms for those grade-levels will be open for students and families.
- Students are welcome to attend Curriculum Night with families.

Staffing update:
- Please welcome Paige Michal, Elementary Instrumental Music (EIM) teacher for 4th and 5th-grades. Paige will be at Hazel Wolf on Wednesdays to work with our students participating in EIM.
- We are in the process of finding a middle school music teacher, as Mr. Kit Jordan is not returning to Hazel Wolf. We are working with the SPS Music department to find highly qualified candidates for the position. (The position is currently posted on the SPS website. All equity-minded music educators should apply!)
October is Disability History, Acceptance, and Pride Month. Disability is a natural part of the human experience. This month, remember that acceptance means creating spaces where every student feels included and respected. People with disabilities often face stigma and isolation, making sense of belonging and community so important. We work very hard at Hazel Wolf to create a safe and welcoming environment for all students, staff and families. This is an ongoing process, and we are always looking for ways to teach, learn, and advocate for all of our community members.
Message from Mr. Zetterberg, Hazel Wolf Librarian:
Dear Hazel Wolf Families,
Banned Books Week is an annual event that celebrates the freedom to read and highlights the importance of open access to information. It draws attention to books that have been challenged or removed from libraries and schools, and it’s a great opportunity to talk about why diverse stories and perspectives are important. You can celebrate by reading a book from a list of challenged titles, visiting your local library, and discussing how stories can help us learn about ourselves and the world around us. It’s a chance to celebrate the power of books to spark curiosity, empathy, and conversation.
As you may know, our school library serves all students from Kindergarten through Middle School, so the books in our library collection target a wide range of reading abilities and interests. We have picture books for students still learning to read, shorter chapter books with fun stories for intermediate readers, and Young Adult (YA) novels about all kinds of personal challenges that young people may experience. My goal as a librarian is to help connect students to stories that matter to them, and I take care to curate a collection that is both developmentally appropriate and representative of our students’ identities, cultures, and interests.
There may be times when your child checks out a book that doesn’t align with your expectations or values. I encourage all students selecting library books to consider any house rules about the content they consume, but my role is to provide access, not to put up barriers. I know you will continue to have conversations with your children about their reading interests and your family’s values. If you aren’t sure about a book they want to read, try reading it together and pausing to discuss things that come up. If a book isn’t a good fit, it is always okay for students to return a book to the library for any reason.
I love working in the Hazel Wolf Library and talking with students about the stories they love, and I appreciate the partnership I have with you to support your children in finding the best books for them.
Happy Reading!
-Mr. Zetterberg, Librarian
