Message from Dr. Breuder:

November is National Adoption Month: We know families look many ways, and we also know families are created by different pathways.  I was adopted as an infant from the Philippines and was raised in Seattle.  I am very close to my family and feel so fortunate for my upbringing and being surrounded by caring and loving people.  That said, I do not look like my family, and I know there are assumptions made about me based on the color of my skin and the differences between me and my family members.  (I have a “twin” brother, as we are the same age, but look absolutely nothing alike….) This perspective has been a big part of my own identity development and how I interact with others, as well as how I think about community, inclusivity, and empathy.  There are so many things that we don’t know about each other, so taking the time to build relationships and understand stories and backgrounds is so important to building a strong community.   This month, I celebrate those stories of fellow adoptees, recognizing the challenges and triumphs of our unique community.

This week there is no school for students, as we are conducting conferences and then have no school for the holiday.  I hope you have a restful and relaxing week.  😊
