Message from Dr. Breuder:

Thank you for helping your children get into the routines and rhythms of a new school year. We have loved seeing students reconnect with friends, build new relationships, and settle into their classrooms with enthusiasm and curiosity.

As we move into the next few weeks, I wanted to share a few updates and highlights from across our K–8 community.

New K–5 Literacy Program: This year, we are excited to introduce a new literacy program, Emerge, for students in Kindergarten through 5th grade. This program provides our teachers with a consistent, research-informed approach to literacy instruction while giving students meaningful opportunities to strengthen their reading, writing, speaking, and comprehension skills.

Families may notice some new materials, routines, and language coming home as teachers begin implementing the program. We are excited about the opportunities this program provides to strengthen foundational literacy skills while also helping students develop a love of reading and learning.

Throughout the year, our teachers and instructional coach (Joy Southworth) will continue to learn, collaborate, and monitor student progress so that we can best support every learner.

Middle School Dances During the School Day

We are also making an exciting change to our middle school dances this year. Middle school dances will now be held during the school day, allowing all of our students to participate.

Moving dances into the school day creates a more inclusive opportunity for students to enjoy these community-building events with their classmates. It also removes barriers that can make after-school events difficult for some families to attend.

This approach is also aligned with practices at many other middle schools. We look forward to creating fun and welcoming experiences where all students can participate, connect with friends, and celebrate being part of our school community.

Building a Welcoming Community

At Hazel Wolf K–8, we want every student to feel safe, respected, and welcomed at school. Our staff has been participating in professional learning focused on how to recognize and interrupt hate speech and other harmful language.

This work helps us respond thoughtfully when difficult situations arise and gives us tools to support students in creating a community where everyone feels a sense of belonging. We are grateful to be doing this important work together as a school community.

Racial Equity Committee Meeting — October 1^st.  The Racial Equity Committee is a partnership between the Hazel Wolf K–8 staff and our PTSA. Together, the committee works to help advance the racial equity work of our school community and support a welcoming and inclusive environment for all students and families.

The committee will meet on October 1 from 5:30–6:30 p.m. in the school library, immediately before the PTSA General Meeting. Families are welcome to join us, learn more about the committee’s work, and be part of the ongoing conversation about how we can continue to strengthen our school community. We hope you’ll join us!

Thank you for your continued partnership as we begin this school year. The foundation we establish together in these first few weeks helps set the tone for a successful year. Please continue to reach out to your child’s teacher or our school team with questions, ideas, or ways we can support your family.

We are grateful to have such a caring and engaged community behind our students.

Curriculum Night:

We are having an all-school K-8 Curriculum Night on Wednesday, October 7^th from 5:30-7:30pm. 

Students are welcome to attend Curriculum Night with families.  Students should plan to stay their family/adults for the duration of Curriculum Night. 

K-5 Curriculum Night:

• Grade-level presentations in the library or cafeteria. 
• Following each presentation, the classrooms for those grade-levels will be open for students and families.  

Middle School Curriculum Night:

• 6:30-7:00pm: One presentation for all middle school families in the cafeteria
• 7:05-7:30: Middle school classrooms will be open for students and families. 

2026-27 ITAC Membership Application

Seattle Public Schools is seeking members for the Information Technology Advisory Committee (ITAC). The membership application is open until Oct. 2. Selected members will be notified on Oct. 16.

ITAC serves as an advisory committee for IT recommendations and future funding planning. Providing expertise and input, the committee includes students, parents/guardians, community members, teachers, and staff. ITAC members are asked to commit to attending monthly meetings for one (1) year. The committee is currently holding Monthly virtual meetings.

School Supplies:

Instead of asking students to bring in supplies on a supply list, we ask families to donate what they can, then we can order supplies for students in bulk.  We also ask for a suggested $25 art supply donation.

We need EVERY student’s family to fill out the Application for Free and Reduced Meals, as it is directly linked to district funding.

We will only be sending a physical copy of the YELLOW Emergency Information form with your student. Please return it as soon as possible. We must have a physical copy in case of an emergency.

Volunteering at Hazel Wolf:

If you would like to volunteer at Hazel Wolf, please make sure to fill out the volunteer paperwork and attend a Volunteer Orientation.  Attending a Volunteer Orientation is a requirement to volunteer at Hazel Wolf.  (This orientation is good for two years, so if you attended last year, you do not need to attend this year.) This orientation is online and takes about 15 minutes.  I strongly encourage you to attend the orientation early in the year to get it done instead of waiting right before you plan to volunteer.

Middle School:

Middle School dance: Stay tuned for the first Middle School Dance of the 2026-27 school year! We will announce the date for this daytime event this week. 

Are you interested in learning more about the IB Diploma Program at Ingraham High School? Join us on Wednesday, October 21 from 6:30-8:30 in the Ingraham High School Library. The program coordinators will talk about the IB Program, and you will have a chance to talk to IB teachers, and meet some Ingraham IB Alumni, and get your questions answered. Adults and middle-school students are welcome. This info session will be specifically tailored for 7th and 8th grade families.

Athletics:

Ultimate Frisbee signups are closed.

Lost & Found Information: The Lost & Found is located by the front office.  Parents may access it anytime during office hours.  Students are encouraged to check it before or after school. View the Lost and Found photo album for pictures and videos of the current items. Clothing left for more than 4 weeks will be donated.

Donate: Support our children’s academic experiences and fun. All proceeds go to support programming at Hazel Wolf, such as plastic recycling:
