All School Announcements

Message from Dr. Breuder:

Well-Resourced Schools: Last week, SPS shared two possible options or models that would close/consolidate or reconfigure schools. By consolidating schools, we can better allocate resources, significantly reduce our budget shortfall and create stronger, more stable schools.

  • Option A: Operate 52 well-resourced elementary schools, closing 21 schools.
  • Option B: Operate 56 schools, including 51 neighborhood elementary schools and five K-8 option schools, closing 17 schools

In one scenario our school is possibly becoming an attendance area K-5 school. In the other scenario, our school will remain a K-8 option school.  In all scenarios, there will be boundary changes throughout our system to make sure that our schools are well-balanced and well-resourced

As leaders in the district, this administrative team is committed to supporting the work of stabilizing our budgets and making sure all students can experience the full range of learning they need and deserve. We will continue to lead and support our school every day but will not be engaging in any advocacy for or against school closure.

Please know we will work to provide support for our school (and our system) now and in the future no matter what the outcome.

Start of school documents: Your child will bring home a packet of documents for you to fill out on Monday.  Please return these documents at your earliest convenience.

Overnight Outdoor Information Session: We are holding an Overnight Outdoor Information Session for families in Grades 4, 5, and 8.  These grades will participate in Overnight Outdoor Education programs this year, so please plan to attend! We will have multilingual interpreters onsite.  Parents and guardians can learn more about these programs and fill out registration at this event.

Wednesday, September 25th, 5:30-6:30pm in the Hazel Wolf Cafeteria.

Staffing Updates:

  1. Elementary Music and Middle School Drama: Crystal Allenton is pursuing other opportunities in Olympia with her family.  We will have a guest teacher in elementary music (and middle school drama) while we hire for this position.  Thank you for your flexibility and patience in our programming while we transition to a different teacher.

Specialist Weekly ShowcaseMeet Ms. Sullivan!

Hi Hazel Wolf! I am kicking off my 13th year teaching PE at HWK8, and my 15th school year overall.

I am excited to finally be getting the bicycling program sponsored by the Cascade Bicycle Club and WSDOT early in the school year. The Bicycle and Pedestrian Safety Unit will be happening September 25-October 14th. This is for 3rd-5th Grade only. During your students’ bike unit weeks, they can bring their own helmet from home. If they do not have their own helmet, one will be provided for them. I will be providing surgical caps for students to wear under the shared helmets to cut down on concerns for lice.

We also received a class set of Strider Bikes for our Kindergarten and 1st Graders to learn on, and it is a permanent set of equipment that stays at Hazel Wolf. The goal is for all students in the Seattle Public Schools system, Kindergarten through 8th grade, to be able to ride a bike! Our Striders also come with a pedal conversion kit, so that the kids can pedal once they feel comfortable and balanced. Helmets are provided for these students, so no need to send one more thing that will get lost in the chaos of the day for our younger students.

I’m looking forward to a great year!

-Miss Sullivan
