New Student Registration and Reaching out to Multilingual Families – The time for new students to register to attend Hazel Wolf for the 2023-2024 school year is here! The window to submit a choice application for an Option School is February 1 through February 28. We want to reach out and give a special welcome to families who may be new to the country and who speak languages other than English. We need YOUR help. Do you have relatives, neighbors, or friends that speak a language other than English who are interested in enrolling at Hazel Wolf? If you do, contact Rachel Projansky at raprojansky@seattleschools.org with any information you have and the ELL Enrollment Team will reach out to you soon.

Thank You to Our Tour Guides! – The school tours led by our volunteers were very successful. There is one more to go on the 15th – see the bottom of the bulletin. We were able to show off all the wonderful things about Hazel Wolf K-8 successfully because of you!

Clean Plastic Containers – Please send in empty and clean containers from yogurt, sour cream, etc.. We need them in art for painting.

Multilingual Family Enrollment Night was a great success! – Last week’s Multilingual Family Enrollment night was a collaborative team of staff volunteers, parent volunteers, Multilingual staff from Hazel Wolf and Bailey Gatzert, and Enrollment Specialists from Downtown. We helped 23 multilingual families navigate the SPS Registration and Options Schools enrollment process for 35 students. A huge shout out and thank you to our staff volunteers/ML staff who cheerfully helped after a long day (13 staff members and 8 parent volunteers)! A big thank you to Rachel Projansky, Multilingual teacher, and Kelly McIntrye, who started this event with an intentional focus on supporting Multilingual families with the process of Open Enrollment. Also thank you to Zoe Leverson, equity champion and community outreach extraordinaire. Her help, organizing and support is invaluable!

Black History Month and Black Lives Matter at School – Last week Hazel Wolf K-8 students and staff participated in a week filled with activities commemorating Black History Month and Black Lives Matter. Our Hazel Wolf educators were given guides, resources and lesson plans to use. Please ask your kids about the activities they did this past week! Here is a great website with information about Black Lives Matter at School week, The Year of Purpose, the 13 principles of Black Lives Matter, resources, videos, and much more!! LEEP Summer Program for current 5th and 8th grade students

What is LEEP?
Think of LEEP as a blend of summer camp and summer school. Through engaging and fun activities and classes, LEEP helps students build excitement around school and learning. Classes are interdisciplinary and intended to improve skills like organization, time management, and self-advocacy.

• We will be enrolling students in the 5th-to-6th grade cohort and in the 8th-to-9th grade cohort.
• LEEP is a four-week summer session. It will run from July 10-August 4, Monday through Friday, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
• It remains completely free for families. Transportation within Seattle, all needed materials, and breakfast/lunch is provided at no cost.

Highlights of the program include:
• Prepare for middle or high school academics.
• Discover leadership abilities.
• Develop computer and multimedia skills.
• Enjoy outdoor education, sports, and other physical activities.
• 6th graders: learn to swim in single-gender classes, and go on an outdoor trip.
• 9th graders: get service learning hours, learn to row, and practice public speaking.

Who should apply for LEEP?

LEEP is specifically for students enrolled in Seattle Public Schools. Students are academically, ethnically, culturally, and socioeconomically diverse. We aim to enroll students who traditionally do not have access to similar summer programs, due to academic performance or family circumstances.

Cupid’s Ball

The dance will be on the 17th 6-8pm in the cafeteria

• Dress code: formal/casual.
• Colors: red, white, pink and gold.
• Presale is happening at lunch everyday till the dance starts. Presale: $3 at door $5
• Food (snacks), drinks, dance games, photo booth. Food and drinks are to be purchased.
• Music box for song requests will be in the middle school pod.

High School Tours

There are still some tours coming up in February!

• Ballard High School: Wednesday, February 15 at 6-8pm
• Alan T. Sugiyama High School at South Lake is having its first Open House in a very long time on February 15 at 5:30-6:30 p.m.! We are a very small school with a focus on the performing arts, internships, and credit acceleration. We are particularly a great fit for those who may not feel like they fit in or who may thrive with small class sizes.

Elementary Announcements

K-5 Math and Literacy Night – Join us for a night of learning for adults, while your children play literacy and math games in the lunchroom. More details to come!

A BIG congratulations to the GRC Champions for Hazel Wolf! It was a tight race for the win. All six GRC teams did an incredible job preparing for the competition and did us proud! The winning team, Secret Life of Pigeons will be moving on to the semifinal round at the Seattle Public Library Central Branch in downtown Seattle March 9th.

PTSA Sponsored Events

Hazel Wolf All School Spelling Bee
The Hazel Wolf All-School Spelling Bee will be held Thursday, February 16, 2023 in the Cafetorium starting at 1:45pm. The winner of our bee will have the opportunity to represent Hazel Wolf at the Regional Spelling Bee of King and Snohomish County at Town Hall Seattle on March 26, 2023. All participants should have completed registration (due February 2, 2023). 

Staff Appreciation Event Friday, 2/17
We’re sending our staff off to mid-winter break with a special hot breakfast on Friday morning, 2/17. We will need A LOT of help to make this a success and show our staff how much we appreciate them!

Hazel Wolf K-8 Family Night at the Mariners
Mark your calendars for Saturday April 1 at 6:40 pm!  This great event is both a fundraiser and a great way to hang out with others in the Hazel Wolf K-8 Community.  Tickets are $12 per person.

Volunteer Opportunities

Last Hazel Wolf School Tour – One more tour to go! Each volunteer will be assigned to a location and provided with talking points if you’re nervous about answering questions. Please text Zoe at 206-445-8521 with any questions or if you want to help but can only volunteer for part of a tour.

Final tour: February 15 School Tour 9:15 – 10:15 am (please arrive at 8:45/9:00am)

Help with The Weekend Backpack Program – We are looking for some reliable volunteers to help with filling backpacks each Thursday. The food is moved from the PTSA closet to the cafeteria and divided between 50 backpacks. With two volunteers, this takes about 30-45 minutes. Volunteers meet at 2pm each Thursday. If we can build a reliable pool, each person would only need to commit to one shift every couple of weeks. Please contact familysupport@hazelwolfk8.org if you would like to come in and help on Thursday afternoons!

Do you love enjoying and or building community – Do you love all the amazing things a school does for your family? If you are passionate about the heartbeat of a school, your help is needed. We cannot do this alone, please join us! We are still looking for a Secretary and Vice President for the PTSA board.
