Message from Dr. Breuder:

Mid-Winter Break: I hope you had a relaxing and restful break! I spent a good part of the week on college tours with my kids.  My son is a senior and he is in the thick of trying to make decisions about this next step of his educational journey.  While I might not-so-secretly want him to stay on the West coast (shhhhh), we really did enjoy visiting Purdue and University of Illinois Urbana Champaign.  As a parent, this has been eye-opening, as we have been navigating the intricacies of college applications and all the emotions that go along with this process.  It was really great to spend time with my kids and see this process through their eyes as teenagers making big decisions for their futures.

Thank you for attending the PTSA General Meeting on February 15th.  I know there were many people on Zoom that I couldn’t see, but I know you were listening.  We hope the presentation answered the questions that were sent in for this meeting; we tried to cover the topics that were listed in the questions.  Please know that we are committed to transparency in communication, and we are also working very hard to improve our communication systems.  Thank you for your patience and flexibility as we continue to build relationships with you and the Hazel Wolf community.

Lost and Found is full again!  Please come to see if any of your child’s things are here.

The time for new students to register to attend Hazel Wolf for the 2024-2025 school year is almost over!  The window to submit a choice application for an Option School is February 1 through February 29.  We want to reach out and give a special welcome to families who may be new to the country and who speak languages other than English.   We need YOUR help.  Do you have relatives, neighbors, or friends that speak a language other than English who are interested in enrolling at Hazel Wolf?  If you do, contact Rachel Projansky at raprojansky@seattleschools.org with any information you have and the Multilingual Enrollment Team will reach out to you soon.

The Musical Note from Ms. Allenton:

This week students in grades K-5 and Middle School drama will participate in a program through the Seattle Opera, which includes an assembly, Monkey and Francine in the City of TigersThis is a 45-minute-long opera written specifically for youth audiences that weaves together music and folktales from India, China, Africa and beyond to tell the story of how Monkey and his brainy sister, Francine, work together to outsmart the crocodile and Lord of the Tigers. Each performance features a cast of four professional opera singers, a pianist, sets and costumes. The full presentation lasts roughly an hour and includes a brief audience prep section before the opera as well as a Q&A with the cast after the show. Participating schools will also receive early access to a student guide to help prepare students for the experience. Here’s a link to our school opera tour webpage where you can learn more about the opera- https://www.seattleopera.org/discover-learn/for-schools/school-opera-tours/

Hazel Wolf’s Night out with the Seattle Storm: Mark your calendars for Saturday, May 25th! Join other Hazel Wolf families at the Seattle Storm game to watch the choir perform the National Anthem! Tickets will be available through a discounted ticket link in early spring.

Middle School:

Documentary viewing: Middle School students are watching a documentary this week, Dark Girls.  As written by two of our staff members, Ms. Sullivan and Mr. J, This is an important opportunity for our students and staff to experience and witness the reality that many people around the world face daily.  We want to highlight the impact of colonialism and racism within communities of color. This movie can trigger a lot of different emotions.  There are a few swear words and we know middle schoolers are mature enough to handle this. Please pay attention to parts of the movie that stand out to you and how the topic of colorism impacts our Hazel Wolf community.

Students will watch this film in Packs on Wednesday, which will include opportunities and space for de-brief and discussion.

The link to this documentary can be found here, should you want to watch it yourself and follow up with discussion with your student.

Shoe request: Ms. Nelson is collecting new and gently used athletic shoes of all sizes! There is an uptick in students that need athletic shoes to participate in PE this semester. If you or your family have any shoes with laces that work for general running and exercise that you would like to donate, please bring them to Ms. Nelson in the gym. If your family needs a pair of shoes, please contact Ms. Nelson to come take a look at the selection. panelson@seattleschools.org

Spring Ultimate:   Middle schoolers interested in playing ultimate frisbee (or have questions about the game) should email Lars Boettcher larspboettcher15@gmail.com.  Practices will be Tuesdays and Thursdays starting February 27th.  Students will need to sign up through DiscNW in order to play. All middle school grades and skill levels are encouraged to check out this fantastic sport.
