Message from Dr. Breuder:

I became a United States citizen in 1980, when I was 6 years old.  I have always been proud to be a citizen of this country.  Two years ago, on January 6, 2021, there was an attack on the United States Capitol Building in Washington D.C.   It was horrifying, tragic, disheartening, and disappointing.  The conversations that I had with my own two children about those events were important. The ongoing conversations we have with each other are important.  This is a time for our children  to learn about our government, about democracy, about citizenship, about the peaceful transfer of power and about how we treat each other as citizens of this country.  Having a difference of opinion is one thing; blatant disregard for authority, governance and for humanity is another.

As an educator, I strongly believe in the power of teaching….ALL of us have a place as a teacher in our children’s lives.  Our children are watching us and looking to see how we respond (or don’t respond) to what is happening in our country.  Silence speaks loudly and sends messages to our children.  Our children are watching everything we do.

This month we honor and celebrate the life, legacy, and work of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.  In our classrooms, our teachers are talking about Dr. King’s work, about race, and that Black Lives Matter.  These conversations are very important for our students to have, as children notice everything (including race) at a very young age.  The racial identity development that children go through impacts how they treat each other as children….and ultimately how they treat each other as adults.  We believe in creating safe spaces and opportunities for students to have open and honest discussions, to be curious and to ask questions, and to learn about each other.  It is through those discussions that we learn more empathy, more kindness and more compassion for one another.

Adults have a hard time talking about topics such as race.  Children are generally unfiltered and can talk about race with an openness that adults don’t have.  When children don’t have a space to talk about things, they create their own spaces and sometimes those spaces are not safe or are full of misinformation.  We want our children to have the tools to navigate conversations respectfully and with a mindset to learn from and about one another.   The conversations and discussions that our children have are so important for their learning and development.  As the adults in their lives, we can support them and teach them through our words, our actions and our behavior.

As we move into 2024, the continued thoughts about how we can best educate the WHOLE child weighs on me, both at school and in our homes.  Thinking about our children as change agents, as social justice warriors, as the next generation who really can change the world….that is inspiring and daunting at the same time.  What are we doing to help our children be advocates, allies, upstanders….to stand up for what is right ALL the time, even when no one is looking? How are we teaching our children to think critically about what they are seeing in the world around them, as they (WE) are being inundated with messages all day long?

I’m attaching the link to an article that I read in the Learning for Justice online magazine.  It’s called Creating a Society Rooted in Justice: Q&A with Britt Hawthorne.  So many of the things in this article spoke to me, as an educator and as a parent.  I hope you can take a few minutes to read this article.  As we move into the New Year, I’d love to think about how we can create spaces for parents and families to come together and talk about how we can create a society rooted in justice.  What can we do individually and collectively?

Thank you for your continued partnership. I look forward for our ongoing conversations and collaboration as we move forward into 2024.

Arrival/Dismissal Reminders: Show your care for our community by following the morning drop off plans. Here is a quick refresher:

  • One way traffic flow northbound on 12th only please.
  • Please DO NOT turn around and go back down 12th Ave southbound. This makes it very challenging for other families arriving to drop off.
  • Please do not drop blocking or in the front driveway. There are students with physical limitations that need access to the lot and the handicapped space.
  • If you are traveling east on 117th, please remember that the drop zone is on 12th Ave north of the traffic circle. Students should not be dropped on 117th.
  • Students should not be dropped by the back driveway on 117th.

Creative mind? Hazel Wolf is looking to create new hallway expectations posters and Wolf Pact posters. We are looking for a parent volunteer with a background in design to help us create posters that are both functional and look nice in our hallways. If you would like to possibly volunteer and have questions, please email Jason Winston the assistant principal jtwinston@seattleschools.org. Thank you for considering helping our school PBIS team with this project!

  • We will be enrolling students in the 5th-to-6th grade cohort and in the 8th-to-9th grade cohort.
