Message from Dr. Breuder:

Nature Bridge and Ramadan: I am so sorry for the oversight in scheduling 5th-grade and 8th-grade Nature Bridge programs during Ramadan.  These programs have been on the calendar for a long time, and it is unacceptable that we did not catch that until just recently.  Please know that this will not happen again as we build our calendar moving forward.  We know this is such an important time of observance for so many of our families, and I sincerely apologize for that cross-scheduling.  It is too late for us to re-schedule these trips all together, so we have been in contact with Nature Bridge staff to ensure that our students observing Ramadan can participate in the Nature Bridge programs.  We will contact 5th and 8th-grade parents about these accommodations this week.  We absolutely want all of our students in 5th and 8th-grades to participate in the Nature Bridge programs, so we are doing everything we can to collaborate with the staff at Nature Bridge and make sure accommodations are in place.  While I know an apology doesn’t fix this mistake, please know that we are reflecting on this deeply and how we can be more culturally sensitive to all of our families moving forward.  I am so sorry that this happened and will do everything possible to make sure it doesn’t happen again.

Staffing changes this week: Please welcome Ms. Michelle Phan to the Hazel Wolf community. Ms. Phan joins us as an elementary teacher, focusing on supporting students in math.  Ms. Phan is filling Hillary Peterman’s position, as Ms. Peterman is officially moving to the middles school math program this week.  Ms. Phan is a familiar face to many, as she completed her student internship at Hazel Wolf a few years ago and was also a Hazel Wolf graduate.  We are very excited to have Ms. Phan join the elementary team and our community!

Budget/staffing: We are working through the budget and staffing process for next year.  We received reductions in allocations for next year (dollars and staffing), so we are having to make decisions about where to make those reductions, which impacts the entire school.  There are intricacies and complexities that are unique to a K-8 school, as we are funded more as a K-5 school, and not like a comprehensive middle school.  This means we have to make budget and staffing decisions that allow for crossover between the elementary and middle school.  Stay tuned for more on this, as this next week is when we finalize the budget and staffing for 2024-25.

Order your 2023-24 Hazel Wolf K-8 Yearbook: Students who order a yearbook by May 15 will receive their yearbook at school with their classmates. Order your 52-page full color book of special memories now through May 15 here:  https://shop.yearbookmarket.com/hazelwolfk8

Middle School:

Spring Sports Alert:

Spring sports are now underway! For the spring season we offer co-ed track, boys’ soccer, and girls’ volleyball (ultimate frisbee is not a school sport). Games and Meets will be held on Saturdays, but we do not have game/meet schedules at this time. With the exception of track, practices will be on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Co-ed Track: Coach Kristen will be returning for Track. She can be reached at Kristen at kristenschriver@mac.com. Additional details:

  • What: Middle School Track
  • Where: Nathan Hale High School track
  • When: Practice Mondays 3:45/4:00 to 5:00pm, Wednesdays 2:30/2:45 to 3:45pm starting 3/18
  • Meets: Saturdays, schedule TBD
  • Virginia See is the parent/carpool coordinator. Please email her at virginia.see@gmail.com  regarding if you have a child/children wanting to do track, if you can drive children to and/or from track (on which days, and how many kids), or if you need a ride for your child to and/or from track. If you agree to be a carpool driver, the tentative plan is to drop kids who need it back off at Hazel Wolf afterward, to either walk home or be picked up from there.

Boys Soccer: Coach K has returned for soccer. Soccer practices start in the back parking lot of Hazel Wolf at 3:35. The boys will run to North Acres Park to have practice until 5:30pm. You can pick up your soccer player from North Acres Park at 5:30.

Girls Volleyball: Scheduled to start this week with a new coach.  Practices will be Tuesdays and Thursdays after school.

Spring Ultimate:   Ultimate frisbee is underway. Practices are Tuesdays and Thursdays after school.  Students will need to sign up through DiscNW in order to play. All middle school grades and skill levels are encouraged to check out this fantastic sport.  Email Coach Lars if interested Lars Boettcher larspboettcher15@gmail.com
