Message from Dr. Breuder:

I know this past week brought about many emotions, as I sent out a number of safety messages to the community.  I know there are many people who want more detailed information, but there are FERPA laws around confidentiality that do not allow me to share more than what I have already shared.   I have a number of reasons for sending out this information to families, which includes (but is not limited to) keeping you updated on what is happening at the school, provide you some context if your child comes home talking about seeing first responders at school, and also to let you know that the school takes safety very seriously.  We know these messages are scary to receive (sending them is one of the least favorite parts of my job), but I believe in transparency and in communication about the happenings at Hazel Wolf.  Even if you don’t talk about these events with your child, please know I will continue to keep you updated with any safety concerns that arise in our school.

On a much more positive note, we were thrilled for our 5th-graders to go to Nature Bridge last week, and for our 8th-graders to head to Nature Bridge this week.  We hope the weather holds out for the 8th-graders! 😊

The Hazel Wolf Staff has done a lot of work with the SPS Racial Equity Analysis Tool as we look at our practice in the classrooms and in our community.  As we analyze some of our systems, protocols, community events, and many other things at Hazel Wolf, we are going to ask for input from our families, as your input is critical!  Stay tuned for that survey link!

I am also including the link to an article, Parents and Caregivers for Inclusive Education.  This was shared with me last year from another school, and I found it to be helpful as we are all working together to provide equitable and inclusive opportunities for our students at Hazel Wolf.

Middle School:

8th-grade Promotion: We have received a number of messages asking if 8th-grade promotion has been canceled.  Not at all! The middle school team is working with students on the end-of-year activities for our 8th-graders, but nothing has been canceled.  The date we have set aside for 8th-grade promotion is Thursday, June 20th, but we are still working on the details for the other events in June.  We strongly believe providing equitable and inclusive opportunities for all of our students to feel celebrated.  We will keep you updated, but please know that nothing has been canceled.  We will celebrate our 8th-graders at the end of the year!

PTSA Announcements and Events

ADHD Parent Group Meeting with Guest Speaker Bethany Febus:  Hazel Wolf’s ADHD Parent Group would like to invite the community to its first educational program on April 25th at 6pm. Our meeting will feature guest speaker  Bethany Febus, ACCG, PCC, PCAC, professional certified life coach (accredited by the ICF and PAAC) who specializes in ADHD and executive function. Febus will give us an overview of ADHD, describe its impacts at home and school, and offer some helpful tips and strategies to make life smoother for anyone who teaches or cares for a child with ADHD. Febus has ADHD herself, so she understands the topic on a very personal level. Would she trade out her ADHD brain for another? She says she wouldn’t: “I am grateful for my curious, determined, passionate, playful, open mind.” Even if your child doesn’t have ADHD, you probably know someone who does. All are welcome to come, enjoy refreshments, and learn a little bit more about ADHD. If you are interested in more information, please email luschyler@gmail.com
