Message from Dr. Breuder:

We had another busy week at Hazel Wolf K-8! It’s been great to see all of the activity and learning that is happening across our school.  I am part of a Principal Learning Network (PLN) of other principals in the NE Region, so I spent the morning last Thursday with principals from Jane Addams Middle School, TOPS, Roosevelt, and Nathan Hale.  This is an opportunity for us to collaborate, learn from one another, and align practice across schools.  This week, Mr. Winston (Assistant Principal) will represent Hazel Wolf at the elementary PLN in the NE Region, so he will meet with the principals from Cedar Park, Thornton Creek, Decatur, John Rogers, Wedgewood, and Sacajawea.

  • Mt. Rainier Institute (MRI): The 6th-graders went to Mt. Rainier Institute for four days, and despite the rainy conditions, came back with smiles on their faces and plenty of stories to tell!
  • Third-grade teacher: Please help us welcome Mr. Michael Ogburn, 3rd-grade teacher new to Room 205.  Mr. Ogburn is taking over from guest teacher, Ms. Lowenborg, who has taken another position in the Edmonds School District.  Welcome to Hazel Wolf, Mr. Ogburn!
  • Assemblies: Over the next two weeks, we will have assemblies for our grade-level bands (K-2, 3-5, 6-8), which will focus on continuing our PBIS (Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports), as well as a celebration of Indigenous People’s Day, which was October 9th.
  • Associated Student Body (ASB) Council: We are pleased to announce our ASB Executive Council members! We will have our first ASB Executive Council meeting this week.  We are looking forward to working with this group of student leaders!
  • President: Ben F.
  • Vice-President: Nejat M.
  • Treasurer: Grey H.
  • Parliamentarian: Eva R.
  • Adult Leadership Ambassador: Nafsif G.
  • Arts Ambassador: Poppy F.
  • Athletics Ambassador: Salem M.
  • Communications Ambassador: Christina H.

“The Musical Note” – from Ms. Allenton

Hello families! I wanted to share an opportunity for kids in 1st grade-4 grade  who love to sing and dance. This year, our school spring musical will be Honk! Jr., which is the story of the Ugly Duckling. In order to most effectively tell our story and to invite more members of our learning community, we will host auditions for the duckling siblings beginning this fall.

Audition requirements:

  • Email a 1 minute video of your child singing to a karaoke/instrumental track to me at cdallenton@seattleschools.org
  • Deadline for initial video is October 15th.
  • Must be 4’5″ or under in height.
  • Be available for a callback dance and song follow up audition in November.
  • Be available for rehearsals after school from April to June. 1x week or less at first. Nearly every day just before performances. Weekend for shows.
  • Understand that we can cast only 4 ducklings. Not everyone who auditions will be cast in the show. Auditioning can be a great learning experience for kids and families that helps develop resilience and empathy.

Email Ms. Allenton if you have questions or need clarification. cdallenton@seattleschools.org

  • Sunday, December 3rd: Barnes and Noble Fundraiser. Show Choir sings at 3:30 and 4:30. More details to come including our fundraising voucher code. Proceeds support building our general music library and the drama department.
  • Thursday, December 7: Jungle Book performance @ 5:30.
  • Friday, December 8: Jungle Book performance @ 5:30.
  • Saturday, December 9: Jungle Book performance @ 2:00.
  • Sunday, December 10: Jungle Book performance @ 2:00.

PTSA Announcements and Events

  • Please Join us for the PTSA General Session: We hope to see you there at the PTSA General Session this Thursday, October 19th. Principal Breuder will provide some information and we will be voting on the PTSA budget.  It is a great opportunity to learn more about our school and ask questions!
  • Homeroom Reps Still Needed: PTA is seeking to support classrooms by helping to recruit parent rep(s) for each classroom and middle school pack.

We could still use more help for the following elementary classes:

  • Nadeau, 2nd grade
    • Boni, 2nd grade
    • York, 3rd grade
    • Thomashow, 3rd grade
    • Bell, 4th grade
    • Holland, 5th grade
    • Einstein, 5th grade

The role of a class representative(s) may include:

  • Supporting your teachers to get class volunteers, snacks or supplies, promoting class events etc.; compiling and sharing a class contact list for families, and helping to plan a couple of class and/or all grade activities, such as park meetups, potlucks, etc.

Please email homeroom@hazelwolfk8.org  to volunteer in this role.

  • Reflections Art Contest: The Reflections Art Contest is going on now (through November 6th)! The theme of this year is ‘I am hopeful because…’ Students will submit their completed works of art in one or all of the available arts categories: Dance Choreography, Film Production, Literature, Music Composition, Photography and Visual Arts. For more information about the Reflections Art Contest, visit the PTSA website.
  • Hazel Wolf K-5 Movie Night! Join us on Friday, November 3rd for a PTSA-sponsored Family Movie Night for K-5th grade!  Come watch The Super Mario Bros. Movie from 6:30pm-8:30pm with your classmates. Bring blankets and pillows to cozy up on the Cafetorium floor for the movie. Low-backed chairs are welcome to set up behind those seated on the floor. Siblings welcome!
  • Reminder: Winter Clothing & Ski Swap is coming soon!  Save all the winter layers your kids have grown out of and consign them at the Winter Clothing & Ski Swap on November 4th at Hazel Wolf! This is a great way to recycle your clothes and gear back into the community (e-stem for the win!) and make sure the whole family is ready for chilly weather ahead.

Adult and child-sized gently used winter and rain jackets, pants, winter socks & layers, rain and ski boots can be consigned. Plus, any and all snow gear – skis, snowboards, boots, poles, snowshoes, bring it all! We will have consignment tables at the school in the days leading up to the event, plus new gear to purchase courtesy of Hazel Wolf family-owned Dusty’s ski shop! If you have questions, please email: fundraising@hazelwolfk8.org
