All School Announcements

Message from Dr. Breuder:

It is hard to believe it is already this far into October!  I do love this time of year, with the weather changing and fall colors all around us.  As someone who grew up in the Pacific Northwest, there are certain times of year that feel calming for me, and fall is one of them.  Additionally, this time in schools is a busy time, but there is also a level of consistency and routine in our days that helps allow for more engagement in learning.  As I move around the school, I see students learning in all spaces (classrooms, hallways, playground, cafeteria) and absolutely love to see, hear, and feel all of the excitement across Hazel Wolf.

I want to provide you with a few updates as we move into this next week:

  • Assemblies: This week we had two assemblies (K-2 and 3-5), where the focus was Indigenous Peoples’ Day.  The middle school will participate in this assembly on Friday.  ASB Council members led these assemblies.
  • Site visit: This week Executive Director of Schools, Dr. Mike McCarthy, will visit Hazel Wolf.  (He does monthly onsite visits to Hazel Wolf.)  The focus of his visits is looking at math instruction and supporting us in aligning our practice across schools in SPS.  As mentioned in last week’s Family Bulletin, I am part of a principal group that met recently at Jane Addams Middle School.  The focus for our group is alignment of practice (specifically in math and literacy) across schools.  During Dr. McCarthy’s visit, we will visit classrooms during math blocks.
  • Professional development at Hazel Wolf: At the PTSA meeting last week, I spoke with parents about  the Professional Development that is happening at Hazel Wolf.  I want to highlight some of this work, as this is the learning that is happening with the educators at our school.  As lifelong learners, we are always learning with and from each other.  The professional development plan at Hazel Wolf includes, but is not limited to:
  • Content-related instruction and assessment
  • Racial Equity
  • MTSS (Multi-tiered Systems of Support)
  • Culturally Responsive Teaching
  • PBIS (Positive Behavioral Intervention Systems & Support)
  • Restorative Practices
  • Social Emotional Literacy
  • E-STEM instruction and alignment
  • Building Leadership Team: This group is a decision-making body that consists of representatives from all departments at Hazel Wolf.  The BLT has three functions:
    • Approve the school’s Continuous School Improvement Plan (CSIP), which essentially contains all the goals for the school
    • Approve the building budget
    • Approve the Professional Development calendar

Thank you for your continued partnership with the educators at Hazel Wolf.  That triangle of learning (student, home, school) is critical in educating the whole child.  We look forward to our work together this year (and beyond).  Thank you! 😊

“The Musical Note” – from Ms. Allenton

PTSA Announcements and Events

  • Thank you for attending the PTSA General Session: We had great attendance at our General Session Meeting last week. Principal Breuder provided a wealth of information about things going on at the school and answered lots of questions.  Our PTSA President Christa Kleiner discussed changes to our PTSA board, and detailed upcoming events we are holding and plan to hold throughout the year.  One of our wonderful Treasurers Kim Steffenmeier walked us through PTSA budget and how we are using our money to support our students and fund wonderful programs like Jump Start and our upcoming Spring Social Fundraiser, to name a few.  It was great to meet some new parents just starting with our community and to reconnect with parents who have been with us for years!
  • The Coat Drive ends October 30th! We want to make sure all Hazel Wolf Students stay warm this winter. Each student who needs a new coat will receive a $50 gift card to purchase one. If your student needs a coat, please fill out this request form. If you have questions about obtaining a new coat, please email Miranda Sullivan – misullivan@seattleschools.org or Kristin Marcu – kemarcu@seattleschools.org  Thank you to all who have donated so far! There’s still time to sponsor a student by donating a $25 or $50 Target gift card. Read our blog for all the details.
  • Homeroom Reps Still Needed: PTA is seeking to support classrooms by helping to recruit parent rep(s) for each classroom and middle school pack.

We could still use more help for the following elementary classes:

  • Nadeau, 2nd grade
    • Einstein, 5th grade

The role of a class representative(s) may include:

  • Supporting your teachers to get class volunteers, snacks or supplies, promoting class events etc.; compiling and sharing a class contact list for families, and helping to plan a couple of class and/or all grade activities, such as park meetups, potlucks, etc.

Please email homeroom@hazelwolfk8.org  to volunteer in this role.

  • Reflections Art Contest: The Reflections Art Contest is going on now (through November 6th)! The theme of this year is ‘I am hopeful because…’ Students will submit their completed works of art in one or all of the available arts categories: Dance Choreography, Film Production, Literature, Music Composition, Photography and Visual Arts. For more information about the Reflections are Contest, visit the PTSA website.
  • Hazel Wolf K-5 Movie Night! Join us on Friday, November 3rd for a PTSA-sponsored Family Movie Night for K-5th grade!  Come watch The Super Mario Bros. Movie from 6:30pm-8:30pm with your classmates. Bring blankets and pillows to cozy up on the Cafetorium floor for the movie. Low-backed chairs are welcome to set up behind those seated on the floor. Siblings welcome!
  • Reminder: Winter Clothing & Ski Swap is coming soon!  Save all the winter layers your kids have grown out of and consign them at the Winter Clothing & Ski Swap on November 4th at Hazel Wolf! This is a great way to recycle your clothes and gear back into the community (e-stem for the win!) and make sure the whole family is ready for chilly weather ahead.

Adult and child-sized gently used winter and rain jackets, pants, winter socks & layers, rain and ski boots can be consigned. Plus, any and all snow gear – skis, snowboards, boots, poles, snowshoes, bring it all! We will have consignment tables at the school in the days leading up to the event, plus new gear to purchase courtesy of Hazel Wolf family-owned Dusty’s ski shop! If you have questions, please email: fundraising@hazelwolfk8.org
